Project Title: Hiding Places; Project summary: In September 2014, my sister and her family moved into a sprawling, beautiful old house in Charleston, SC. My nephew C., 9, and niece L., 7, love to explore and hide out in the dark corners and secret spaces of their new home. We worked together to create this portrait series of their favorite hiding places. Caption: L. (front) and C. Griffin pose for a portrait on the steps of their Charleston, SC home.
C. Griffin, 9, poses for a portrait as he prepares for a Lego battle in his room in Charleston, SC. Before moving to this new house, he and his younger sister had always shared a room. Having a door to close between himself and the world has helped him develop a sense of independence as he approaches adolescence.
Alone in her room in Charleston, SC, L. Griffin, 7, poses for a portrait while drawing in her journal. At first, she didn't want her own room and was afraid she wouldn't be able to sleep without her older brother nearby. But with the addition of lavendar walls and personal decorations, she has come to like having her own space.
L. Griffin, 7, poses for a portrait in one of her favorite hiding spots: the laundry bin of her Charleston, SC, home. The sweeping old house with its many empty cabinets and forgotten corners is a perfect place for getting lost.
C. Griffin, 9, reluctantly poses for a portrait in his best hiding place, the cabinet under the bathroom sink in his Charleston, SC, home.

C., left, and L. Griffin pose for a portrait in the unfinished cubby hole under the stairs in their Charleston, SC, home. The cubby hole, which the siblings have furnished with pillows, is a frequent gathering spot for telling secrets and hiding from adults.
L. (left) and C. Griffin pose for a portrait in the entrance to their top secret clubhouse, the S.U.T.H., or Secret Under The House, Club. Club admittance is highly restricted and very few adults have passed the club's security clearance.
